Biography

Ms. Elizabeth Winston Lanier (1907-1996) was a teacher in the Petersburg school system for 43 years, primarily as an English teacher at Petersburg High School.

A Petersburg native, she was a graduate of the College of William and Mary.

Ms. Lanier served as national president of the Kappa Delta sorority from 1947 through 1951 and was an officer for 15 years. She was the state vice-president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for teachers; the president of the Delta Kappa Gamma's Zeta Chapter from 1960 to 1961; president of the Petersburg Branch of American Association of University Women; and founder of the Richmond Alumnae Association of Kappa Delta Sorority. Ms. Lanier was honored by the Kappa Delta sorority in 1979 when one of four annual awards for research in Orthopaedics was named "The Elizabeth Winston Lanier Research Award" for research in Orthopaedics.
