Richard Bland College Recognized for Safety

Richard Bland College of William & Mary’s Community Crime Prevention program has earned Crime Prevention Campus certification from the Virginia Criminal Justice Services Board (CJSB).

The RBC Department of Campus Safety and Police is one of only a few Virginia colleges awarded this prestigious certification. To earn certification, the College had to detail and document crime prevention goals, accomplishments and programming for an 18-month period. There were 11 core safety elements and four electives required for certification.

Core safety elements included having a crime prevention specialist on staff, maintaining mutual aid agreements with outside agencies and departments, compliance with the federal Clery Act, and developing and implementing a crisis management plan.

“The CJSB’s certification of RBC’s community safety plan comes as a reminder of the utmost dedication that the College’s police force has for the safety and security of students and community,” said RBC Police Chief Jeffrey Brown. “The members of the Department worked tirelessly to accomplish this certification.”

The Crime Prevention Campus certification program is administered by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) to develop and set standards for community safety initiatives.
