RBC Representatives Selected for the William & Mary Board of Visitors
Richard Bland College of William & Mary President Debbie L. Sydow has announced that Associate Professor of Mathematics Matthew J. Smith, Ph.D. and second-year student Kayla Hand, have been appointed as the Faculty Representative, and Student Representative to the Board of Visitors of the College of William & Mary for the 2018-19 academic year.
Dr. Smith, who was appointed to a second one-year term, has more than a decade of experience teaching mathematics, and serves as the college’s Accreditation Liaison for its accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). Dr. Smith is also Chair of RBC’s Reaffirmation Committee, and is currently leading the College’s decennial reaffirmation of accreditation. Dr. Smith earned both his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and M.S. in Mathematics, from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008 and 2000 respectively. He earned his B.S. degrees in Mathematics/Mathematics Education from North Carolina State University in 1996.
“My first year as faculty representative to the Board of Visitors was very positive, productive, and educational,” said Dr. Smith. “I am very honored and excited to have the opportunity to continue to represent the RBC faculty on the Board, and, in particular, I am looking forward to assisting with the implementation of the Promise Scholar’s program, which will welcome distinguished professors from the College of William & Mary onto the RBC campus,” said Dr. Smith.
Kayla Hand is a sophomore honor student from Chesapeake, and a catcher on the RBC softball team. She is enrolled in the prestigious Promise Scholars program, an innovative collaboration with William & Mary that is designed to ease transfer from RBC to W&M for high-ability, Virginia residents who are eligible for a Pell Grant.
“I am honored to be selected as the student representative to the Board of Visitors, and look forward to being the voice of my fellow RBC students to the BOV,” says Hand.
The first William & Mary Board of Visitors meeting for the 2018-2019 academic year will be held from September 26-28 in Williamsburg.
